If you submit a coin with dust for grading....

does the grading company clean off the dust before grading it?

Yep.
Dust blown off with air.
Your submission point won't let you send a grimy one through without warning you it may come back ungradable.

I'll never COP out to this, but years ago (before I knew how to put my pants on - NUMISMATICALLY speaking) I REALLY CLEANED a GOLD (what a jerk!) 50 Franc 1857 French coin with BLUE MAGIC METAL cleaner. Boy was it pretty!

I had two and cleaned what DUMMY here thought was the worst ONE.

End of the SHORT story is the ONE dummy cleaned came back AU55 with NO cleaning remarks - this was the worst ONE! The good one came back AU50.

SO my advice is blow off the dust as "the smarter one than I" said above, then think of other ways to do the job with OUT RUBBING the darn coin.

Or send it to me and I'll clean it with BLUE MAGIC METAL cleaner and it'll look like it was just MINTED! :signs14: Just kidding.

I buffed a a 2 1\2 with a jewelers rouge.

Poof - turned it into bullion. :banghead:

Ungradeable - guy in the coin shop had to bite his lip to keep from laughing.
Still have it as a reminder.

I have a FEW Saints & Double Liberties that came back in BODY BAGS - for being WHIZZED and ALTERED SURFACES tags.

Great REMINDERS to have around when I "THINK" about buying RAW coins sight unseen - I saw these PUPPIES and was tricked.

But, then again, I'll NEVER cop out to it, right?

Ouch.

But I'm still kicking myself for the self inflicted damage.
Was a very nice coin.

Learning the hard way sucks.

No way, I'll blow the dust off the coin for free with my mouth. If you're lucky, you might get some slabbed saliva. :bear_tongue:

You can soak the coin in hot soapy water and rinse it in running water. Pat dry with a soft cloth towel without rubbing, that will not damage the surfaces.

You can also soak in a solvent like acetone or rubbing alcohol. Then rinse with water and pat dry. Just don't scrub.

NO!! I have a Van Buren's Liberty 1/2 oz gold coin graded by NGC in MS-69 condition, and there is a rather noticable black speck of dust resting on the obverse field. It really irritated me that they didn't take care of it before slabbing it, so now it's there forever.

Thanks for the heads up - I was told differently.
You potentially saved me from another lesson.:ok:

Dang it, I knew I shouldn't have blown off that gold and silver dust from the minting process, before sending in the coins!

Plan A: A hammer KILLS that "FOREVER" problem! :signs14::111::111:

Plan B: Seriously, NGC PCGS ANACS all recapsulate for a very MINOR fee. Call them tell them the problem and ask them what "should you do?"

Plan C: follow their advise and get it RE SLABBED!

:yes::yes:

Then send it to me

Shines like a brand NEW proof reverse Silver Eagle! :thumb.aspx:

It's just the grading that usually gets affected. :shot:
